Known since ancient times where its Archaeological Hall was used as a hypogeum temple, the cave is located
in the valley of the same name and the Rio Su Mannau flows from its bowels.
The cave of Su Mannau is a large karst complex under the limestone block that goes from Su Mannau – Terra Nieddas to the slope of Antas – Oghittu. Composed of two main branches originating from two small inland waterways: the Left Branch from the Placido River and the Right Branch from the Rapid River.
On the beauties of the internal rooms it would be almost useless to dwell by now well-known at the national level, rich in stalactites and stalagmites and of imposing concretization phenomena such as aragonites and calcite crystallizations.
The left branch is characterized by a rather bumpy course with wide and deep wells, above all in the section that goes from Pozzo Rodriguez to the Infinity Branch.
In this branch you can admire:
– the Sala Serra, a large room full of extremely white castings;
– the Pozzo Rodriguez over 20 meters wide and 23 meters deep. on which towering columns dominate, which is currently part of the tourist branch of the cave;
– the Infinity Branch rich in concretions and alabaster castings.
Going down to the last level we arrive at the Placido river that flows downstream creating suggestive accumulations of river sand.
In the high branches several rooms: the Crystal Room which will lead to the Puddu Gallery and the connection to the Right branch. The right-hand branch, called in its first part Ramo dei Bolognesi, is the most frequented section, with an almost horizontal course reaching the Rapido River for about 3500 mt.
On this branch one can admire the most impressive karst phenomena: – The Pisoliti waterfall with the salon above where singular pearls of a cave cover the floor; the Pensile lake, about 40 meters long and 5 meters deep, can be crossed during flood periods with the aid of dinghies; the Sala del Sonno rich in eccentric stalactites and aragonites with large columns up to 15 meters in height; the White Room, difficult to get to, but with truly unique aragonites; the Ribaldone salon, a large collapse area over 150 meters high; the Vergine room, a true pearl of Su Mannau, a large white room adorned with real whitest organs with unique shapes; the Bizarre Room, which can be overcome with diving suits, is another large room rich in enormous aragonites and very strange concretions called “mushrooms”; the Hall of the Firs last large known environment of the cave is a huge room over 40 meters high with the floor adorned with real crystal fir trees.
From here the caves continue into a narrow semi-submerged tunnel that is very difficult to ascend. At the present state of the explorations this branch has been explored for over 1 km., Several lateral tributaries bring groundwater giving rise to the Rapid River.
